Media Release - Kawerau District Council finalising services at red setting of traffic light system - 1 December 2021

Kawerau District Council finalising services at red setting of traffic light system

Following the government’s announcement that Kawerau will move into the red setting of the new traffic light system Kawerau District Council has been working to understand the implications.

We are working through each of the areas and how the red setting will guide our Council services and operations.

In parallel, the organisation has been working through a risk assessment process for all roles within the Council to ensure the safety of our staff.

Council’s focus is the safety of our staff and the provision of essential services. Throughout the pandemic and the various lockdowns Kawerau District Council has continued to provide essential services such as rubbish, recycling and greenwaste collections and Three Waters services.

In addition, Council staff continued to provide additional support services to customers via remote or online services.

Mitigating the risks to staff and the public is being worked through with guidance from Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) that was released late last week.

Council is currently working through the implications of the traffic light system on facilities such as the Maurie Kjar Memorial Swimming Pool, venues and facilities, the Transfer Station and the Council Offices.

Kawerau District Council chief executive Russell George says the decisions will be made with a focus on safety first for both our staff and the community.

Further announcements will be made by Kawerau District Council following another leadership transition planning meeting tomorrow and discussion with elected.

“We will be advising the public as soon as we have worked out the best solutions for safety for our staff, our customers and contractors and our community. We are mindful that this is an evolving situation that may require change as we move forward.”
