This document is a summary of recycling and rubbish collection in Kawerau.
I need another recycling crate. How do I get one?
Each additional or replacement crate has a one-off charge of $10. These can be purchased from the Kawerau Council Office on Islington Street.
Do I need to separate my recyclables?
Only to the extent that greenwaste goes into the 240 litre greenwaste bin and is collected every fortnight, while all other recyclables go into the recycling crate and are collected every week.
What is the note I found in my recycling crate?
A note left in your recycling crate means the item(s) are not currently recyclable. Non-recyclable items include ceramics, cloth and other items including disposable nappies. It may also mean that the recycling has been placed out for collection in a way that makes it unsafe or contains dangerous materials for the contractor (for example, broken glass).
What is the sticker I found on my greenwaste bin?
A sticker left on your greenwaste bin indicates that there has been a contamination found or that the bin is overweight and cannot be lifted by the truck. You will need to either remove the contamination/reduce the load and put the bin out again (or contact Council for an extra collection) or take the contents of the bin to the Transfer Station for disposal yourself – standard charges will apply. If the bin has been removed owing to contamination, you must contact the Kawerau District Council Office on 07 306 9009.
What do I do with my paper and cardboard boxes?
Paper and flattened cardboard boxes should be placed in your recycling crate with heavier items such as glass jars on top to reduce the risk of it blowing away.
What plastics can I recycle?
Only plastics graded 1, 2 and 5 are recyclable and can be placed in your recycling crate. Look for a triangle (usually on the bottom) with a number in it. If you see a triangle with a number from 1, 2 or 5 in it, pop it in the crate. Please clean any products from your plastics before placing them in the crate. All other plastics need to be put into your rubbish bin.

Can I recycle plastic bags?
Yes, these can go in the recycling crate. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to recycle them, but we will continue to collect them and investigate a permanent solution.
Can I recycle or dispose of my unwanted electronic waste? (computer screens, old computer components, etc)
Yes, but not through the kerbside recycling service. To dispose of electronic waste in Kawerau, please take them to the Transfer Station. A small fee will apply for the disposal of these items.
