Kawerau has good roads and footpaths

Roads and Footpaths

There are 40kms of sealed road in Kawerau - and one kilometre of unsealed road. All roads are resealed every 15 years. Kerb and channel are swept regularly.

Kawerau District Council receives 75% subsidies on roading for the district from New Zealand Transport Agency or NZTA Waka Kotahi. The balance of the funding required is via rates from the Kawerau District.

Every three years, the Council submits requests to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) with the plans for road and footpath maintenance across the district. These applications are assessed by NZTA. If approved, the jobs form part of the operations and maintenance programme.

The 2023 Procurement Strategy for Roading and Footpaths was endorsed by NZTA in 2023 and runs through until April 2026 when Council will submit the maintenance and renewal programme for roading and footpaths for the next three years for the district (2026 to 2029) to NZTA.
