The Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre is a fabulous family-friendly complex in Kawerau. The must-visit complex is free to use and offers a wide range of activities, including a covered BBQ and seating area, splash pad, and inflatable bouncy pillow. The complex is named after Maurie Kjar, who was one of the founding fathers of Kawerau. Maurie Kjar served from 1959 to 1962 on the first Kawerau Borough Council. He was one of the dedicated workers responsible for the planning and construction of the Kawerau Swimming Baths.
Outside of the pool's operating hours, the complex is available for hire for private functions, birthdays, events and company functions. The under-cover BBQ area offers a large and smaller BBQ, and these are available for hire (separately or together for large functions) during the complex’s opening hours.  

There are five different pools available for use at the Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre:

1. Main Pool (25 metres): This pool is perfect for those who require a larger space, whether for swimming or walking lengths, or hiring out for a larger group. Schools and learn-to-swim programmes can hire the main pool during operating hours. The main pool typically sits between 30-33 degrees Celsius in winter and is slightly cooler in summer.
2. Bulkhead Pool: This smaller pool is sectioned off from the main pool and provides a smaller area for children to play. Equipped with a hoist means the bulkhead is accessible to everyone. 
3. Learner Pool: Ideal for those who still require their parents or caregivers' supervision but are more confident and slightly older, wanting a bit more space to swim.
4. Baby Pool: Great for little toddlers and babies who just want to splash around in shallow water. This pool is a fantastic way to introduce your little ones to the pools and summer fun.
5. Spa Pool: The Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre also offers a 40-person spa pool, which is nice and relaxing, sitting at 38-40 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The spa pool has a hoist, making it accessible and allowing everyone, the opportunity to have fun and relax, at the Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre. 

Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre Opening Hours 
The Maurie Kjar Aquatic Centre is open most of the year except Christmas Day and the annual shut in October/November. The council utilises this closure to complete any critical repairs, maintenance work, and upgrades.
Summer opening hours: 8am – 6pm (please exit the pools by 5:30pm)
Winter opening hours: 9am – 6pm (please exit the pools by 5:30pm)
