Another milestone towards the construction of the Kawerau Container Terminal was achieved recently with the completion of the ‘Heads of Agreement’ that relates to the land area where the terminal will be located.
The Kawerau Container Terminal will provide an efficient rail link to transport goods and connect heavy industry in the Bay to global markets.
Kawerau District Council chief executive Russell George said he understood there was concern in the community and questions about progress, which shows people realise how important this is for the community.
“This project positions our community as a leader in supporting New Zealand’s transition to the circular economy. This terminal and the Kawerau Putauaki Industrial Development will attract new industry and create jobs,” Mr George said adding, “The terminal is a critical part of the overall Kawerau Pūtauaki Industrial Development as it will maximise success for business by providing critical infrastructure to reduce waste and connect industry.”
Kawerau Container Terminal project spokesperson and Sequal Lumber chief executive David Turner said the time taken to sign off the ‘heads of agreement’ was needed due to the detailed contract that involves multiple stakeholders. “We needed to ensure everyone was communicated with and treated fairly.”
David said the project will create an environment that maximises ‘value-added industry to succeed, which in turn means our community can succeed. “This is a turning point in the economic well-being of our community and our region.”
The project focus has now moved to the detailed design phase which entails planning and simulation technology to ensure the most efficient design of the terminal.
David said they were seeking advice and best-practice modelling from other terminal providers in New Zealand. This design phase will continue throughout 2020 with the goal to start construction of the Kawerau Container Terminal in 2021.
“As with all large-scale projects, there may be other bumps on the journey - but the team is committed to delivering the project and appreciate the support the community has for the development.”
The project team are also planning to offer interim services at a temporary location in 2021.
