Work is progressing well on the roundabout being constructed on State Highway 34 by the Pūtauaki Trust.
Pūtauaki Trust General Manager John O’Brien recently presented to elected members and management at a Kawerau District Council workshop.
Now in stage two, the Pūtauaki Trust industrial development includes a roundabout and link roadway connecting to an existing internal access road within the Pūtauaki Trust Industrial area.
John outlined that the Trust’s development was about ‘future proofing’ and would ensure that the industrial area was accessible for potential businesses and manufacturers to set up and connected with the planned Kawerau Container Terminal.
Infrastructure had now been completed into several land allotments of varying sizes by the Pūtauaki Trust nearby the existing Waiu Dairy factory.
John said the Trust was now in a position to market these allotments to suitable lessees on a long-term lease basis ideally to sustainable businesses and manufacturers with a low environmental footprint.
John acknowledged the assistance of the Council and Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau (ISK) which combined with the investment by the Provincial Growth Fund had meant the aspirations of the Pūtauaki Trust were now being realised.
Kawerau District Mayor Malcolm Campbell congratulated Pūtauaki Trust for this progress and pledged their continued support. “We will continue to support these initiatives and encourage investors into Kawerau, which will ultimately create more jobs for people in our district.”
A long journey, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, the development still had a way to go.
After completion, the roundabout would become the responsibility of Waka Kotahi (New Zealand Transport Authority).
The Pūtauaki Trust is planning the roundabout would be completed in April 2021.
