Special event to recognise volunteers during flood response

A volunteer appreciation night is being held next week to thank everyone involved in the response to the April floods in the Eastern Bay.

The event, on Monday, May 12, will see performances by singers Howard Morrison Jr and Russell Harrison. Local radio personality Colin Magee will be the master of ceremonies.

Kawerau mayor Malcolm Campbell says volunteer efforts during the April floods were amazing, and a wonderful thing to be part of.

“It’s at times like that the community pulls together to help those in need. I’ve never been prouder of Kawerau and its people.”

The Kawerau Welfare Centre at Rautahi Community Marae was open from April 6-18, supporting people affected by the flooding. In total 654 people registered there for help, whether it was for food parcels, accommodation, clothing or other support.

The volunteer appreciation night is on Monday, June 12 at the Kawerau Cosmopolitan Club. Doors open at 5.30pm, with formalities beginning at 6pm.
