Historic opening for Kawerau District Council
The Porritt Glade Lifestyle Village is officially open in Kawerau.
The official opening of the Kawerau District Council’s Porritt Glade Lifestyle Village was held on Saturday, July 18.
Despite the weather, around 100 people attended the opening on Piripiri Crescent in Porritt Glade Lifestyle Village.
Mayor Malcolm Campbell acknowledged Tūwharetoa Kaumatua and Reverend Tumuhitai (George) Raerino and Te Haukakawa (Boycie) Te Rire for the karakia, Mihi and sharing of knowledge about the naming of Piripiri Crescent.
Mr Campbell also acknowledged Generation Homes in Taupo which has partnered with the Kawerau District Council to provide high-quality, affordable accommodation for people aged 60-plus.
Situated off River Road in Kawerau, the Porritt Glade Lifestyle Village will eventually comprise 29 two-bedroom units. The gated village is ideal for people looking to downsize but maintain an independent living situation.
Four of the first six two-bedroom units being built at the Porritt Glade Lifestyle Village have confirmed owners who have purchased an Occupation Right Agreement. As the Porritt Glade Lifestyle Village is situated on reserve land, the land cannot be purchased outright.
The first two units are completed. The next two will be completed by the end of August and the final two units of the first six being constructed, will be ready by the end of September 2020.
There was considerable interest from people during the open day including for the two that remain available. The units cost $310,000 and a 10 percent deposit or $31,000 is required to secure a unit.
In addition, owners pay an annual fee to cover insurance, rates, exterior maintenance, lawn mowing and statutory administration. This fee $6,400 in 2020 but will be reviewed and adjusted to reflect any changes in costs.
