Kawerau District Council reviews vaccine pass requirements

Today, Kawerau District Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the COVID-19 Protection Framework Implementation.
With the introduction of the framework on 3 December, Kawerau District Council had agreed to continue to grant access for all people regardless of vaccination status to their offices and facilities.

Council also agreed to maintain strict adherence to the guidelines with regards to numbers of people using the facilities, which was outlined by the government’s COVID-19 protection framework (the Traffic Light system).

At the emergency Council Meeting held in the Council Chambers at 9.00am this morning, the Mayor and Councillors agreed that this would continue.

“This decision is based on inclusivity and the wish that everyone in the community has access to Council services and facilities,” Mayor Malcolm Campbell said.

“We are mindful, that in the past five weeks, our vaccination rates have risen dramatically with a community-led approach that Council has been integrally involved with.”

Mayor Campbell said, these rising vaccination rates, combined with the single positive case in our district, underpins that this is the correct decision for the current situation.
“Our Councillors believe this is the correct decision for our community right now.”

The decision-making took into account that the Council is the ‘one-stop shop’ for many in the district.

Kawerau District Council will review its decision in January and earlier should the situation with positive COVID-19 cases change in the district.

Access to Council Offices and facilities is based strictly on the COVID-19 protection framework such as mask wearing, scanning or signing in and limits on numbers of people using facilities. Full details of these can be viewed on the Council website.
